In Memoriam
Beloved Nyoda Alumna:
Selena “Sally” Haines Dudley (1939-2016; Nyoda summers 1951-1957)
By Joan Bunting Lennon
Tiamalia 1954

Sally was born in Chestnut Hill, PA, the daughter of William H. Haines III and Charlotte Ullom Haines. She grew up in Montclair and graduated from Montclair High School before receiving her bachelor’s degree from Smith College, graduating with honors in 1961.

Sally worked in New York City for Reader’s Digest as a researcher before moving to New Vernon in 1966 where she became active in the township and in environmental activities. Over the next forty years, Sally made the preservation and conservation of open spaces her priority. Over several decades, she served the town of New Vernon, Harding Township, and the state of New Jersey in a variety of leadership positions, including Executive Director of ANJEC (the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions) for 14 years, and Mayor of Harding Township, its first female mayor.

Some of her many professional honors include Harding Township´s 1987 Citizen of the Year, the New Jersey Planning Officials’ 2009 Achievement in Planning Award, and the New Jersey Environment Lobby’s 2010 Environmental Legacy Award. Mrs. Dudley also wrote a book, “New Vernon Fire Department 1921 – 1971”.

Sally is survived by her husband, three sisters and an extended family of nieces and nephews, as well as countless friends, many from her summers at Nyoda. Nyoda meant a lot to Sally. She was in Tiamalia 1955 (see photo). During her 7 years at Camp, she was both a camper and a counselor, passing on her skills and her passion for tennis to others. Her sister Nancy remembers how all the campers loved Sally, both on and off the court. Music was a large part of life in the Haines family. Since all three of her sisters (see photo) were alumnae, Sally´s family was often treated to Nyoda songs, some louder than others, especially “Camp Nyoda, Hats Off to Thee”.

Sally´s life was the embodiment of the Nyoda Spirit, and brings to mind the words of another Nyoda song: “Someday we hope to repay you in service to others, as you’ve served us here.” Sally lived a life of service to others, passing on the Spirit of Nyoda. A role model for us all.
